Biography

Michael was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 29, 1953. He has an extensive background and experience in the public sector, having served for four years as Corporation Counsel for the City of Schenectady, three years as Chairman of the New York State Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board and eight and one-half years as Chairman of the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) of the State of New York.

Throughout her undergraduate and graduate schooling, she has been highly interested and focused on issues of international human rights.  Courtney authored a paper published on the Albany Law School International Law Studies Blog covering the issue of Transnational Corporations and Human Rights Abuses abroad.

Biography

Ben first joined the Firm in 2012, practicing in the area of general civil litigation.  In 2014, he left to join the Albany office of Barclay Damon, LLP, where he served in the Torts and Product Liability, Professional Liability and Mass and Toxic Torts practice groups.  Ben returned to the Firm in 2017 to assist its clients in labor and employment litigation and commercial litigation matters.  Ben has appeared in courts throughout New York State, handling numerous matters in all stages of litigation, including appeals, trials, and jury verdicts.

Biography

Jim is a partner of the Firm, overseeing all litigation. He began his legal career as Staff Counsel to the New York Public Service Commission from 1979 to 1983, and has been in private practice since that time. Jim has tried over one hundred civil and criminal cases to verdict throughout New York State in all four Departments of the Appellate Division and in the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts.

Jim has been appointed as an Arbitrator in the Albany City Court and as a Mediator for the U.S. District Court, Northern District of New York. He has also been appointed to the Governor’s Judicial Selection Committee for the Third Department by Chief Judge Hon. Judith Kaye and re-appointed by Chief Judge Hon. Jonathan Lippman.  He was also appointed to the Character and Fitness Committee of the Third Department by Presiding Judge Hon. Karen Peters. Jim continues to be the Chairman of the Albany County Bar Association Diversity Internship Program for Minority Law Students, and was one of its original organizers.

Biography

Geneve Lung’s practice concentrates on commercial real estate and finance. Prior to joining Roemer Wallens Gold & Mineaux LLP as an associate attorney, she worked in Seattle with The Boeing Company’s supplier management contracts division. Additionally, Geneve worked with The Hawaii Tourism Authority and Cellular Bioengineering, Inc., Honolulu to provide statistical, analytical, and marketing research.

Born and raised in Hawaii, Geneve enjoys traveling worldwide throughout Asia and Europe. She has been to Japan five times and is semi-proficient in Japanese. Active in the community, Geneve is a volunteer tax preparer for the elderly in Albany. She stays fit with a combination of golf, hiking, tennis, and dance.

Biography

While serving as the Firm’s Managing Partner, John has concentrated his practice in in the area of finance – relating to commercial real estate, commercial and industrial collateral, equity and venture capital funding and municipal bond issues.

John has been involved in transactions, ranging from less than $1 million to complex transactions exceeding $150 million, on behalf of numerous national and regional lending institutions which provide construction and permanent financing for all types and sizes of projects and purposes, as well as credit facilities for municipal bonds. He has served as bond counsel to a number of municipal issuers, as underwriter’s counsel on a variety of transactions and as developer’s counsel for properties such as shopping malls, hotels, multi-family housing projects, retail strip centers and office buildings.

John’s varied experience also includes structuring various business organizations, preparing and negotiating documents for investment, equity financings, advertising, e-commerce and general business transactions.

John preceded his legal career as an elementary special education teacher and, when he’s not managing the Firm or working on a financing transaction, John enjoys golf, exercise, music and spending time with his family.

Biography

Elena joined the firm in September 2013, as a member of the Labor and Employment Group.  Her practice focuses on various aspects of public sector labor relations and municipal law, including employee disciplinary proceedings, employment litigation and policy drafting, as well as providing guidance on compliance with state and federal labor, discrimination, and public record disclosure laws. Elena also provides employee training on issues including anti-discrimination and harassment, workplace violence, employee corrective action, progressive discipline and social media. Prior to entering law school, Elena worked in the public sector for the New York State Department of Financial Services.

Biography

Jay entered the working world at a very young age, helping at his father’s engineering firm with tasks ranging from landscaping to surveying, and his entrepreneurial skills flourished when he formed and operated a web site design company with a college classmate during his undergraduate years. Before attending law school, Jay gained further business experience, overseeing the operation of three hotels, several residential rental properties, numerous boat slips, a car rental business and two restaurants. Jay currently focuses on commercial lending, municipal bond financings and corporate law as a member of the Firm’s Finance and Real Estate Group and, additionally, handles various estate matters, including preparation of wills and trusts, probate proceedings and general estate planning.

Biography

Earl is a partner in the Firm. He has successfully litigated in trial courts throughout the State and has prevailed in appellate arguments before the Appellate Division and the Court of Appeals.  He has also successfully litigated in Federal District Courts and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.  Earl practices extensively in administrative hearings, arbitration, disciplinary and other administrative proceedings as a member of the Labor and Employment Group.  Prior to entering private practice, Earl was an Assistant District Attorney in St. Lawrence County and a New York Assistant Attorney General in the Division of State Counsel.

When he’s not working, Earl is an avid runner and he has completed several marathons and triathlons. He is also active in the community, as the current President of and serving on the Board of the Schenectady Museum. Earl spends the balance of his time with his family.

Biography

Matthew P. Ryan joined the firm after serving as associate general counsel for a labor union for almost 13 years. Prior to his labor union experience he was an attorney in the private sector focusing on personal injury litigation. Matt now concentrates his practice in all aspects of labor and employment law focusing on public sector labor relations. In this regard, he has conducted numerous arbitrations, collective negotiations, mediations, fact findings, and interest arbitrations. His experience also includes representing parties before the New York State Public Employment Relations Board in all aspects of matters conducted before the Board. He also has significant experience in practice before the courts of the State of New York and New York’s Federal Courts.

Biography 

Mary is a partner of the Firm who initially practiced for several years in Manhattan with emphasis on both municipal finance and federal litigation. She came to the Capital Region in 1979 and since that time has devoted the majority of her practice to the representation of school districts and other municipal clients, including cities, counties, villages and towns. Mary joined the Firm in 1996.

Biography

Jim is the Senior Partner in the Firm. He has focused his practice and has been fully involved in public sector labor law since 1969. He was the founding partner in 1976 of a firm which served as General Counsel to the Civil Service Employees Association from 1976 to 1987. Since 1987, Jim has served as labor relations counsel for more than thirty municipalities and other public entities in New York State, including cities, towns, villages, counties, school districts and public authorities. He has negotiated several hundred collective bargaining agreements on behalf of public sector municipal clients and has very successfully appeared before the Public Employment Relations Board, innumerable interest arbitration panels, various State Supreme Courts, the New York Appellate Division and the Court of Appeals, on a variety of public sector labor relations and public retirement system issues.

Biography

Amanda is a partner of the Firm, practicing in the field of general civil litigation. She focuses primarily on motion and appellate work and has successfully argued cases on a variety of legal issues in courts throughout New York State. She has a particular interest in health policy and patient advocacy issues.

In 2011, Amanda was appointed by New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman to serve on the Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commission for the Third Judicial District. She was reappointed to an additional three-year term in 2015.

Amanda is a patient volunteer with Community Hospice of Saratoga and served on the board of the Friends of the Saratoga Springs Public Library from 2012-2014.
